Views of Restitution: The Gutmann Family – Museum Boijmans van Beuningen

On the initiative of the Restitutions Committee, the Gutmann family and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen made an agreement about the restitution of six sixteenth-century majolica plates to the heirs of the Gutmann family.

Simon Goodman

The children of Fritz and Louise Gutmann made efforts after the Second World War to recover the family’s art collection. In 2014 the family contacted Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen for information about the majolica plates.

After constructive consultation it was decided to divide eleven plates. The family received six plates and five remained in the museum. The museum can now tell the story of both the majolica plates and the Gutmann family in perpetuity.

The Restitutions Committee always strives to base its recommendations and rulings on research by the Expert Centre Restitution. Since there was a joint decision, the Restitutions Committee did not issue a binding ruling.

The documentary recounts the story of the Gutmann family.
