Claim to Isaac Israels painting rejected

The Restitutions Committee has advised the Minister of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) to reject a claim to a painting by Isaac Israels.

The State Secretary for Culture and Media has appointed Professor A.I.M. (Toon) van Mierlo as the new Chair of the Restitutions Committee and Professor C.J.H. (Corjo) Jansen as a new Committee Member.
Thanks to these two appointments, the Restitutions Committee (RC) is once again at full strength:
– Professor Toon van Mierlo (Chair)
– Dick Oostinga (Vice-Chair)
– Dr Jaap Cohen
– Dr Saskia Cohen-Willner
– Professor Corjo Jansen
– Dr Jan van Kreveld
– Dr Claartje Wesselink
Dick Oostinga will continue as Acting Chair until 15 August.
The RC is pleased that both members are joining the Committee and looks forward to fruitful collaboration.

On Thursday 26 June the Dutch Restitutions Committee will contribute to the international conference Recovered Memories in Paris. Descendants of families from five European countries who were victims of art looting during the Nazi regime, professionals and interested parties from all over the world will engage in discussing the importance of restituting Nazi looted art. The emphasis is on sharing the histories of the robbed families.

The Restitutions Committee has advised the State Secretary for Culture and Media to restitute the oil painting Fighting Card Players (unknown artist) to the heirs of the Jewish antiques dealer Meijer Marcus van Praag (1871-1943). Research revealed that Van Praag sold the painting from his private collection in October 1941 to an art collector. The sale was connected to measures taken by the occupying forces against Jewish citizens and arose out of necessity.
